Announcing Super Teacher award

Best teacher award of the year, 2009 : Phyllis Koh.

Message from the Super Teacher, Phyllis:
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Teachers and those directly involved in the care and development of the children in my school, a professionally fulfilling and reflective "Teachers' Day"!

Since 2008, the Government has rolled out a number of initiatives and schemes to enhance teachers' training. In 2009, new teaching training requirements were also instituted as part of the quality drive to further uplift the child care profession. Parents whom have been with us since before 2008 are well aware that our school has always been ahead of the government policies in this area ie. quality qualifications.

I would like to applaud the commendable spirit of our school's parents in understanding and supporting the management's effort in ensuring that only the right teachers are being retained and/or recruited for providing quality care and education to our young children.
With your active participation in expressing your appreciation to the teacher(s)' effort, it boost our continual motivation to upgrade ourselves professionally to ensure relevance in terms of pedagogical competencies and practices and in keeping ourselves appraised of emerging trends and challenges in the early childhood field.

As I strongly believe that parents are the 1st teachers, this day celebrates our role as an educator and pays tribute to the tireless commitment and selfless dedication that we bring into our work in providing quality care and education to our young children. I believe that together, we can strive towards better outcomes for our children in nurturing and moulding the future of our next generation and in providing them with a good head-start in life.

Our Super Teacher ??
Definitely....Teacher Phyllis!
Great teaching skills with plenty of creative ideas.
Yen Ming likes to attend her class, as fedback by him "It is fun".
These are definitely the main driving forces for him to look forward to attend the school every day. Thanks to Teacher Phyllis' interesting and creativity in the experiments. From Yen Ming's parents. Tee KS and Annie Ching

My husband and I really want to express my heartfelt appreciation to Ms Phyllis. Parveena, our daughter enjoys her lessons tremendously. We love to see her coming home, eager to share with us and her older sisters her newly-attained knowledge on topics, ranging from English all the way to Science. This has fuelled her lively curiosity in more ways than one. I attribute this to Ms Phyllis as she conducts her lesson on thought-stimulating topics without seeing age as a barrier. I think she has prepared Parveena excellently for primary school. Thanks, Ms Phyllis, you are one in a million.(Suchjeet & Jasmin- Parveena's parents)

Nominations from Oisin & Caitlin's parents:
Teacher Phyllis - because she includes lots of fun activities and games in her classes to help the students learn the concepts taught, and because she has a good sense of humour and enjoys playing with the class. Oisin is learning to take more care with the presentation of his work, and to exhibits more self-responsibility now. We applaud Teacher Phyllis' creative curriculum which piques the children's interest, challenges their perceptions, and encourages them to innovate.

Dear Parents,
Research shows that students are more likely to be interested, energetic, curious, and excited about learning when a teacher is enthusiastic (Patrick, Hisley, & Kempler, 2000). Students were intrinsically motivated to learn when taught by an enthusiastic teacher. Teacher enthusiasm cannot be a cure-all for the motivational ills of students, but it is an excellent way to mobilize interest, excitement, and curiosity in a classroom (Patrick et al.).

There are intrinsic and extrinsic factors, that motivate learners and the factors can differ significantly from student to student. Nonetheless, we believe one overlying consideration is paramount: If the teacher is motivated and enthusiastic about what she is doing, then there is a greater probability students will be motivated as well. It seems like an obvious premise, but ask a student about the influence of a teacher who charges into the classroom excited about a lesson, creates relevant connections to their lives, presents challenges to be overcome, and makes it fun in the process.
This year we want to honour educator(s) who:-

•has the 'plus' factor in the way she relates to the students
•goes the extra mile to impart knowledge and help their students do well in their studies
•inspires her students to be better human beings
•develops the love and skills to learn
•shows great dedication and passion for the job
•is creative and engaging when teaching
•connects with and care for students
•has 'teleport' to you (parents) the pulse rate of her enthusiasm, motivation and perhaps kiasuism on your child's learning and well beings
Motivation can be depleted but rechargeable, hence, it is important for the beneficiaries to reciprocate via such exercise. Post a photograph of the teacher you are nominating together with a write-up on why you think your nominee deserves to be a Super Teacher. Any existing teacher who is teaching or has taught your child can be nominated. You may send your write-up to Phyllis Koh via email (enquiry@phyllisricciaschool.com). Please submit your write-up by 30 July 09.
